From QTI .zip to Word in three steps
- 1
Export the quiz from Canvas
In your course go to Settings › Export Course Content, choose Quiz, tick the quizzes you want, and create the export. You’ll get a .zip in QTI format. A full course .imscc works too.
- 2
Drop the .zip above
The quiz opens straight away. Every question is shown with its type and points; switch on Show answers to check the key.
- 3
Choose a copy and click Word (.docx)
Student copy (questions only), Answer key (correct answers marked), or Both, with the key starting on a new page.
Which question types convert
Fully supported: multiple choice, true/false, multiple answers, short answer (fill in the blank), essay, matching and numerical questions, including accepted answers, numeric ranges and margins, points and feedback.
Fill in multiple blanks and multiple dropdowns show the question, each blank and its answers. Any other type keeps its question text with a note that the type isn’t supported yet, so nothing silently disappears.
Questions
What is a QTI file?
QTI (Question and Test Interoperability) is a standard XML format for quizzes. Canvas uses QTI 1.2 for classic quiz exports: a .zip with an imsmanifest.xml and one folder per quiz.
My zip has several quizzes. Does that work?
Yes. Each quiz in the export is listed in the sidebar; open one and export it on its own.
Does it work with New Quizzes?
Not yet. New Quizzes exports use a newer QTI version. If yours won’t open, email us so we know to prioritise it; you don’t need to send the file.
Can I convert QTI to Google Forms, Kahoot or Moodle XML?
Not yet. Today the outputs are Word and printable PDF. Word files can be uploaded to Google Drive.
Are images in questions kept?
Yes. Images stored in the export are embedded in the Word file.
